Spiders

I'm Meli, the Spider Lady      The picture below was taken at this very web site, underneath the barn. This is where the tractors that are "mothballed" are kept. No one goes under there very often, so the spiders are pretty comfortable knowing that their efforts will not be destroyed too often. Did you know that by weight, spider silk is stronger than steel? Yep, if you made a strand of steel wire thin enough so that it WEIGHS the same as an equal length strand of spider silk, the wire would break before the silk would! If you have ever walked into a web like the one shown below, you KNOW this to be true. You will be pulling silk off your glasses and out of your hair WELL after you thought you removed all of it!!

Radial Spider Web
This is the classic RADIAL type of spider web, where the supporting strands radiate from a central hub. Do you know why a spider does not get stuck in his/her own web? It's because the radial strands are not sticky. The strands that CROSS them are made of a different type of silk, and THOSE are the ones that are sticky. The spider ONLY walks on the radial strands.
Shhhhhh... Now don't tell Webster, but I have another friend named Zerbert who works with me in my web-cleaning service. Take a look HERE
