A little Polish lesson: Władisław is usually translated into English as "Vladislaus", rhyming with Stanislaus. It is the equivilent of the Russian "Vladimir". In Polish the "W" is pronounced like a "V". The "L's" in Władisław have slanted lines through them which make them pronounced like "W's". When a "V" sound comes at the END of a word, it is pronounced like an "F". So, the name is pronounced "Vwahd eess wahf". The nickname "Wład" sounds like the word "WAD", as in "wad of chewing gum" with a "V" sound in front of it - VWAD. Polish people named Władisław usually Anglesize their name into "Walter" and Polish people named Stanisław usually Anglesize their name into "Stanley". Hence all the Stans and Walts down at the Polish club!! "Krew" (pronounced "kreff") is the word for blood, in the sense of "gore". Wład's favorite expression "Psia krew" (Blood of a dog) is the equivalent of our expression "Son of a (female dog)", and it is used in much the same way. It makes one wonder how the female dog got such a bad reputation?? Anyhow.... Now you get an idea of the derivation of Wład's last name - Krewski.
